During the Republican period(1911-1949),many of China's university presidents were not merely intellectual elites, but very influential education reformers. They made great efforts to engage both internal and external stakeholders-either in embracing a new system or breaking with old tradition as to promote the modernization of higher education in China. Through dialogue and debate with various stakeholders, university presidents helped transform Chinese people's conception about higher education. They also promoted the development of a modern higher education system in China through negotiations and cooperation with stakeholders. Last but not least, through discussion and interaction with stakeholders, those university presidents managed to establish the cultivation of "whole person" as the ultimate goal of higher education in China.
